This pukana challenge is NZ's latest viral TikTok trend and the mana is giving people 'chills'

"You feel all energy that each person transmits…”

A recent TikTok trend has te ao Māori capturing attention worldwide.

Off the back of a resurfaced clip of Manukura roopu performing at Ngā Kapa Haka Kura Tuarua o Aotearoa, the trend gives those who give it a go the opportunity to show off their meanest pukana.

The trend, made popular by TikToker Te Otāne, is phenomenal as rangatahi up and down Aotearoa are getting involved. The trend begins with people showing off a neutral facial expression, mouthing the words to the whakaeke before unleashing their powerful pukana.

Even popular Aotearoa TikToker Latiyah gave it a red hot go, and she absolutely smashed it out of the park.

Instagram page @maoriworldwide posted a few of the best pukana on the trend, and after watching all of these, don’t be surprised if you see a video from me later today - just don’t tell my boss that I’ll be practising in the bathroom mirror.

People from all over the world flooded the comments with positive energy.

“I love all of them. The original video gave me chillz and all the feels. Thank you for sharing your culture,” wrote one fan from overseas.

Another said: “They all are the great ancestor’s seeds becoming and became fearless and brave as their past is strong in the present time.”

While a third echoed: “Beautiful ❤️ You feel all energy that each person transmits…”

It's one of those beautiful moments in pop culture where our rangatahi are at the forefront of broadcasting our culture to the world, showing off just how beautiful te ao Māori truly is!
