Tegan hilariously hones her poi skills to tautoko NZ in the FIFA Women's World Cup 2023

"I think that's the best we're gonna get!"

The FIFA Women's World Cup 2023 is off to a roaring start, and guess who's ready to shine on the global stage? That's right, it's our amazing Aotearoa, all set to flaunt our rich cultural heritage to the world!

One young kōtiro is doing just that while showing off her mad poi skills in a viral TikTok vid.

Seriously, this girl, Latiyah, is next-level awesome! Her moves are mind-blowing, and she's got the whole world talking about the beauty of poi.

Speaking of which, the talented Mai Morning Crew's Tegan Yorwarth took on the challenge after seeing Latiyah's moves.

At first, it was a bit of a hilarious disaster - honestly, I thought Tegz was about to take an eye out!

But with her determination and a LOAD of practice, she turned into an absolute poi sensation. YTG!

Now, if you're heading to any of FIFA Women's World Cup 2023 matches, get ready for some poi action!

You'll find poi being handed out outside the stadium and used to celebrate inside, or feel free to make your own to take along to a game or support at home!

If you're up for trying out some poi moves yourself, check out TikToker Te Aorere Pewhairangi learning from the incredible Pere Wihongi.

Trust us, it might look daunting, but once you get the hang of it, you'll be mesmerising everyone around you!

Oh, and Pere's got a pro tip for you: "The key is to distract the other team." Brilliant strategy, right?

In honour of all the wāhine rocking it at the tournament, a special waiata called ‘Poi Tukua’ has been released.

It's a heartwarming creation by Makayla Purcell-Mainini, with production magic from Six60’s Ji Fraser Dan Martin in collaboration with the legendary Dame Hinewehi Mohi.

It's all about the spirit of poi transcending the Māori world and captivating the entire globe.

Spreading the beauty of te reo Māori and the wonderful art of poi, ‘Poi Takua’ is inspiring Kiwis and international visitors to give poi a whirl.

And who knows, maybe you'll end up as a poi pro like Latiyah!
