Footage of tamariki performing a beautiful kapa haka routine at a tangihanga is making the rounds online again.
Posted to TikTok by @paranihia6 in December of 2022, the emotional video has been viewed over 4 million times and has racked up more than 900k likes. It shows a group of around seven kids singing in harmony and dancing in unison, filling what would be a sombre room with joy, according to text on the TikTok.
“Ngā mihi our babies,” the caption reads. “We loved and appreciated this SO much. FOR YOU DAD.”
Commenters are in awe at the talent the little kids possess, as well as sharing their love and appreciation for Māori customs and traditions.
“Thank you for sharing this beautiful part of your culture,” one person wrote. “What amazing voices.”
“Arohamai for the loss of your pāpā but what a special way to send him off in joy and love,” said another. “Chea, these babies are neat alright with such strong voices.”
“Who else watched it in a loop by accident cause you loved it so much and didn't realize it was over and started again?” a third added.
“What beautiful talented children they are,” one more wrote. “Stunning little voices! Absolutely love this.”
Another powerful performance at a tangihanga came in January of this year from Black Fern Stacey Fluhler.
She shared a video of a passionate mass haka performed at her uncle’s funeral. She posted the footage of the massive crowd partaking in the Māori tradition to her TikTok, where it has gained 550 thousand likes and over 12 million views.
