‘So fresh’: Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei men go viral for looking clean af at Te Matatini

Sheeeesh.

Te Matatini has wrapped up after four days of incredible on-stage performances, celebs getting involved, and fans having fun off-stage. Now, men from Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei - a Tāmaki Makaurau iwi - are going viral for hosting the festival's pōwhiri in some fresh as suits.

Recorded during the pōwhiri for Te Matatini, the clip shows Te Kura Taiaho Kapea, Ngarimu Blair, Taiaha Hawke and other members of the iwi and others in suits that must be perfectly tailored with hats and shades to match.

All that - and the smash hit ‘P.I.M.P’ by 50 cent playing - has led to over 200,000 people liking the video and more than two and a half million people viewing it.

Some comments were getting a bit thirsty, but others were purely appreciating the drip on display.

“Not me checking for wedding bands,” wrote one commenter.

“The younger generations can take notes from these classy handsome men,” another said.

“So fresh & so clean clean,” a third added.

“I love the tailored look with the hats. That style looks so good,” one more had to say.

Ngāti Whātua actually originally founded Mai FM, which is crazy because no one here is even sniffing THAT level of drip.

It wasn’t just snazzy gentlemen who went viral during Te Matatini. Last week a few younger festival goers went viral for whipping out the wiri to direct other fans to their seats.

The video shows a group hanging out by the stairs, waiting for fans to walk past. When they come by, they launch into a wiri to direct them in the right direction, even chucking in some intense pukanas.

Te Kapa Haka o Te Whānau-a-Apanui were crowned 2023 champions on Saturday, and they went viral for their waita-ā-ringa - a rendition of a song from all the way back in 1961, ‘Runaround Sue’ which Megan Trainor sampled for her track ‘Dear Future Husband’.
