Our man Producer Ryan was born and raised in Christchurch, with his whakapapa tracing back to Scotland and the Netherlands. With that in mind, you can understand how he wasn't exposed to much te reo growing up.
But that hasn't stopped Ryan from taking it upon himself to learn his pepeha, which sees him go on a journey of discovery as he learns about his own whakapapa while getting himself more familiar with te reo Māori.
It's a profoundly moving journey that shows just how empowering te reo Māori can be, no matter what ethnic background you come from.
