The Te Reo version of Disney's smash hit film Moana is premiering on Disney+ on June 26 in Aotearoa and Australia.
The Academy Award nominated film's te reo version was created by our local power couple Taika Waititi and Chelsea Winstanley, alongside Tweedie Waititi’s Matewa Media Trust, and supported by Te Mangai Paho, with production led by Waititi in collaboration with The Walt Disney Studios.
Chelsea Winstanley said: “This is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate and extend our indigenous language and culture into new media platforms. Following the successful launch of Disney+ across both New Zealand and Australia it’s exciting that people can enjoy Moana Te Reo again and again for years to come.”
The date of the premiere is set to align itself with the upcoming Matariki celebrations.
“When the movie was first released it became an instant hit among Kiwi audiences, showcasing the beauty and history of Pacific culture.
We know that it means a lot for the local community that Moana will now be available in Māori, on demand...
The process of recording the Te Reo version required some of Aotearoa's top voicing talents, with Rachel House (“Gramma Tala”), Temuera Morrison (“Chief Tui”), Jemaine Clement (“Tamatoa”) and Oscar Kightley (“Fisherman”) all reprising their roles.
We will also see the talents of Jaedyn Randell (“Moana”), Piripi Taylor (“Māui”) and Amanda Ashton (“Sina”) on full display as they inject a new energy into the film.
The film also enlisted the talents of Rob Ruha as musical director, alongside Maisey Rika, Cilla Ruha, Tawaroa Kawana and Tommy Waititi.
