Google Maps has taken a Bay of Plenty man on an unexpected detour, landing him 2.5km out to sea.
The unnamed 29-year-old man was walking from Opotiki to Kawerau when he used Google Maps in an attempt to find a shortcut, NZME reports.
The man reportedly tried to walk across the Ohiwa bar during an outgoing tide when he became stuck on a log.
Surf lifesaving crews were called at about 10am Saturday, NZME reports.
"We were given a phone number to call and we ended up talking to a man who was 2.5 kilometres out at sea on a log," Whakatane Surf Lifesaving Club spokesman Craig Julian said. "He told us he had gone into the water at 7am, meaning he was in there for more than three hours," he told NZME.
Julian said the man seemed "okay" when he was picked up.
He was taken to Whakatane Hospital but has since been discharged.
