Taika Waititi will direct a follow-up to his 2017 Marvel film Thor: Ragnarokreports The Hollywood Reporter.

The entertainment media outlet reports that Waititi has signed a deal to direct and write the fourth Thor film in Marvel Cinematic Universe. Entertainment Weekly and movie site Collider also say they have confirmed the news.

It means his Warner Bros. adaption of Japanese manga Akira, which was meant to be released in May 2021, will have to be pushed back.

Wellington-born Waititi received acclaim for Thor: Ragnarok, which took the franchise down a more comedic route and reinvented elements of the character before Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

That film grossed more than US$850 million at the global box office and has a 93 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Hollywood Reporter reports Chris Hemsworth will reprise his role as Thor for the fourth entry.

Waititi's next film, Jojo Rabbit, will be released in October.
