Julian Savea dropped by Toulon following brutal dismissal from club president

Former All Blacks winger Julian Savea is free to go and not welcome at Toulon anymore, after his performance in a 19-10 defeat by Agen, the Top 14 club president says.

"I'm going to ask for a DNA test," Mourad Boudjellal told French radio RMC on Sunday. "They must have swapped him on the plane [when he joined from Hurricanes].

"If I were him, I would apologise and go back to my home country. I've told him that he was free to go and wasn't welcome at Toulon anymore."

Savea, the 2015 World Cup winner, joined last year from Super Rugby side Hurricanes, but has not made the expected impact on the French competition, playing much of his rugby out of position at second-five.

His mid-season return to New Zealand for brother Ardie's wedding also angered Toulon fans, which sparked a backlash from wife Fatima on twitter.

"Let me set the record straight," she tweeted. "Before Julian signed his contract, he asked for time off in December to attend his ONLY brother's wedding.

"So this was agreed upon by both the club and Julian, or else Julian would not have come to Toulon in September and instead in January."

Last year, Fatima Savea also attracted the ire of fans, when she slammed the level of French rugby - and particularly Savea's teammates - after a 37-10 loss to Stade Francais.

"I swear this team doesn't know how to pass," she posted on Twitter. "Rugby on this side of the world is very behind.

"I feel Julian's pain out there on the field."

Savea also drew head-lines in November, when he fell asleep at the steering wheel and flipped his car in France.

Toulon have struggled this season, lying 11th in the standings.
