July is Glaucoma New Zealand's annual appeal month, a chance to raise awareness of glaucoma and encourage people to have their eyes regularly checked by an optometrist.
Glaucoma is the most common cause of preventable blindness in New Zealand and many people are unaware they have glaucoma until they have their eyes tested.
Glaucoma New Zealand recommend people have an eye examination by the age of 45 and continue to have regular examinations every five years. From 60 you should get checks every three years.
People with a family history of glaucoma have a much higher risk of developing glaucoma, but with early diagnosis, treatment is available.
