Beyonce poi dance video goes viral Thu-02-Jul-15 10:00 Last week we shared a video of Maori performing arts group Tāreikura performing their Beyonce inspired Poi routine playfully named 'Poiyonce'Tāreikura have blown up online featuring on the likes of Daily Mail and The Huffington Post. "The choice of Beyoncé was two-fold," Tāreikura creative director Tinamaree Kaipara told the Huffington Post."Firstly to give our Māori performing arts immediate relevance to our young people and secondly, well, [she's] Beyoncé slash queen slash female role model."Tāreikura consists of young women aged 8 - 18 who speak Te Reo and practice both traditional and modern versions of Maori dance, weaponry and footwork every week."This is one of the ways we as a family support the revitalisation of our ancestral tongue as well as cultivate the natural talents of our young people," says Kaipara.Tāreikura poi to Queen B's "Move Your Body" - went viral last week.
